The 9 at 9 Workplace safety concerns, Iran seeks diplomatic resolution in Geneva and North-South ministerial meetings.

LAST UPDATE | 22 hrs ago

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Workplace Safety

1. In today’s morning lead, news correspondent Eimer McAuley reports that concerns were raised about a Dublin City Council depot where a worker was fatally injured last year.

The Health and Safety Authority is still investigating the circumstances of his death, but workers have said the area was often congested, too compact, and dully lit.

New US ambassador

2. A new US ambassador to Ireland was approved by American politicians last night

New Jersey real estate developer Edward Walsh has been appointed to serve as Clare Cronin’s successor, whose term ended when Joe Biden left the White House.

Inside Palestine

3. Palestinian journalist Hana Salah spoke to people in Gaza about the real fear of death if they try to access the internet. Between 12 and 14 June, there was a full blackout across the Strip.

Salah details her and others’ stories about dealing with the lack of mobile phone coverage and trying to contact the outside world during Israel’s siege on the region.

Zach Bryan

4. Country singer Zach Bryan is set to play two nights in the Phoenix Park in Dublin this weekend.

But who is this new star? There seems to be a generational divide in the 29-year-old’s reach in Ireland: half of The Journal’s newsroom had never heard of him.

Iran-Israel meetings

5. Iran’s foreign minister is meeting his European counterparts in Switzerland today to seek a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict with Israel.

Abbas Araghchi will also meet the EU’s foreign commissioner, Kaja Kallas, as he seeks to negotiate a settlement before US President Donald Trump decides on whether to take military action against Tehran.

North-South Ministerial Council

6. The Taoiseach, Tánaiste and other Cabinet members will travel to Co Armagh today to attend the North South Ministerial Council, where economic issues are set to dominate the agenda.

They will meet Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly for the council’s 29th plenary meeting.

Kneecap gig in Dublin

7. Belfast rappers Kneecap played their first gig in Dublin last night following this week’s court appearance for one of their members in the UK.

Appearing triumphant and defiant at Dublin’s Fairview Park, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh roared, “I’m a free man”, to the thousands attending this evening’s gig. Mo Chara has been granted unconditional bail until his next hearing on 20 August.

Peacekeeping at risk

8. Niall O’Connor reports that there is ten weeks to save Irish peacekeeping missions in Lebanon as the US is weighing up whether to end its support for the UN-backed operations.

US officials have arrived in Lebanon and Israel to assess whether their country should veto the renewal of the UNIFIL mission.

Sunny weather

9. It is set to be a very warm and hot day today, with temperatures likely to reach highs of 29 degrees in parts of the country.

Met Éireann has forecast a dry and warm day for most of the country, with some mild showers in Ulster and Leinster. The hottest temperatures are set to be recorded in the midlands.
